Set Up Vehicle Parameter Types

Vehicle parameter types define the performance standard for the vehicles assigned to it. These parameter settings affect the usefulness of reports and queries. When you first enable Performance Monitoring, the default vehicle type is "Rsv," which does not report data. You can create a vehicle type and mark it as the default so it is automatically assigned when a new vehicle is auto-created.

Before setting up vehicle types, determine how to group vehicles. Best practices include:

  • By truck or engine type
  • By operation, for example, "bulk" or "reefer"
  • By driver type: owner operator or company driver
  • By mechanical or electronic engine

Vehicle types are listed on the left; click a type to see its settings on the right. You can see the number of selected, authorized vehicles that successfully received parameters the last time they were sent. A black check mark appears next to the default vehicle type.

For descriptions of the specific settings, see the glossary or the Administration and Configuration Guide, Chapter 2

Fleetwide Overrange Parameters

Fleet Overrange Parameters appear at the top of the list, but are not a vehicle parameter type. They are used to specify fleetwide exception thresholds for automatic data extraction. For example, if a driver exceeds your overspeed time or percentage threshold, the mobile unit automatically triggers a data extract.

Recommended Settings

If you're setting up Performance Monitoring for the first time, it is recommended that you enable these settings only:

  • Excess Speed Time: 002 (minutes)
  • Coast Out of Gear Time: 001 (minute)

Leave the remaining settings disabled until you are familiar with the system. Enabling too many overrange parameters can result in excessive message billing costs as automatic extracts are performed. Consult with your Customer Service Representative before changing the Parked Idle Fuel setting.

An automatic extract does not reset the regular extraction cycle and does not include a performance matrix. You can set up the system to send an alert when an automatic extract has occurred. The user selected in Performance Monitoring Company Settings receives the alert notification according to his or her user preferences.
